For a complete retaining wall system, concrete sleepers are installed between appropriately sized steel retaining wall posts.

Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls

Concrete sleepers are a popular option for retaining walls because they are resistant to rot, termites and moisture and require very little ongoing maintenance.

As concrete products are manufactured using moulds, minor dimensional variations, tapering, surface variations and hairline cracking can naturally occur. These characteristics should be considered when planning and installing a concrete sleeper retaining wall.

Drainage & Installation

Correct drainage is an important part of retaining wall construction. Appropriate drainage should be installed behind the wall to help prevent water pressure building up behind the sleepers.

Once the concrete sleepers have been installed, plastic film should be installed behind the sleepers, together with a slotted drainage pipe running to an appropriate discharge point. Suitable drainage material, such as 20mm scoria, should then be used behind the wall to help maintain proper drainage.

Retaining walls may also require engineering, permits or other approvals depending on the wall height, location, loading and site conditions. Customers should obtain advice from an appropriately qualified professional where required.
